Leonard

Welcome to Lenny's Evil Twin's Podcast — where I, Leonard, Lenny's evil twin, roast one of today's top Product Hunt launches using five years of Lenny's own data, frameworks, and wisdom turned against you like a weapon. Would Leonard ship it? Let's find out.

Quai

And I'm Quai — here to make sure the actual evidence gets a seat at the table, since Leonard mostly just uses data as a blunt instrument to hit people with.

Leonard

Today's victim is JustVibe — the search engine that will generate you a Lifespan Age Converter, a TikTok Earnings Calculator, AND a Guest Wedding Attire Guide, all for free, with zero signup. Someone looked at the app store and thought, "what if we just made all of that, but worse, and gave it away?"

Quai

The "give it away" part is actually the whole strategy — and it works. The freemium playbook that drove an NPS of 70 was built on massively over-delivering a free product better than the paid competition. JustVibe is doing exactly that: a fully functional, interactive trip planner, zero code, zero signup, runs in your browser.1

Leonard

You just described the problem. That NPS-of-70 story came from a company that recognized analytics widgets had terrible retention, terrible willingness to pay, and terrible NPS — and pivoted AWAY from being a graph factory. JustVibe's entire product IS the graph factory they ran away from.1

Quai

The retention argument only holds if users don't activate deeply — but teams who activate in-product are 21X more likely to stay active and monetize one to two years later. JustVibe's whole model is instant in-browser activation: search, get a working app, use it immediately. That multiplier is baked into the core loop.2

Leonard

A 21X retention multiplier assumes people come BACK. Who bookmarks their JustVibe wedding attire guide? You check it once, you wear the outfit, the wedding ends — that app has a natural lifespan shorter than the canapés. "Set and forget" is the activation trap, and JustVibe's entire catalog is set-and-forget by design.3

Quai

Okay, retention is a real question — but the monetization path is already written. The fastest-growing B2B businesses went free, then started hearing customers say "Hey, why aren't you charging, you idiots? I want to pay so that you don't go away." Going from free to paid was fully self-service. That's the exact demand-driven monetization JustVibe is setting up.4

Leonard

Those customers begged to pay because the product was FOUNDATIONAL to their workflow — Stripe processed their money, Loom replaced their meetings. Nobody's workflow depends on a drum loop sequencer generated in a browser tab. And that's before we get to the horizontal problem: horizontal tools must survive a very long, uncertain journey toward product-market fit, where customers reject the product for ambiguous reasons. One founder described it as landing on a melting island. JustVibe didn't just land on that island — they built a search engine on it and called it a feature.

Quai

The horizontal critique is real, but "only a small fraction of free users become paid" cuts both ways — when your cost to serve each additional user is near zero and you require no account to start, even a tiny conversion rate across massive volume is a viable business. The freemium model breaks when time to value is long and support costs are high. JustVibe's time to value is a single search query.5

Leonard

The instant time-to-value is genuinely clever — but a product that builds anything for anyone about anything, for free, forever, with no account, is not a business model, it's a pitch deck with a search bar. Leonard wouldn't ship this.
